Working with software and computers every day and staring at the screen both for work and pleasure - I'm finding myself being more and more excited by small "real" physical things in my life.

First, there's books and printed media. Recently, I've discovered that holding a paper book in my hands gives somewhat of a soothing effect, calming my body and mind. Not to mention the fact that the pure physical sensation of holding a book just genuinely feels nice. I'm also finding a lot of joy in occasionally buying a printed magazine. And even went as far as to subscribe to a printed newspaper! Which is something I never thought I'd do in this day and age.

Second, there's a lot of pleasure in doing things with my hands. Mostly, it's small things around the house, like hanging a shelf on the wall or replacing the lightbulbs. And I know at least a couple of folks who do carpentry as their hobby outside of their Software Developer jobs. And at least one guys who’s a farmer. I think I'm starting to understand why - it's very rewarding to be able to physically touch the result of your hard work and challenge your brain in a completely different way from the usual daily grind.

Third, there’s just simply being in the nature. Working with computers and living in a big city is not a very "natural" state for humans to be in. Going on hikes and even walking in the park can be a great antidote to the daily stress of our busy lives. Sounds obvious, I know. But I sometimes forget that I can take a quick walk outside, go to the nearest park, and just chill there for a little bit. While giving some time and space for my subconscious brain to process the details of the day.

These are all small things but I find that they help a lot. And every day I appreciate them a little more. It’s these tiny daily routines that can bring a lot of happiness into your life.
